My work is greatly informed by the lineages of generative somatics, mindfulness meditation, western psychotherapy, Health at Every Size and liberation movements in the U.S. and internationally.
My work is primarily body-based, or somatic in orientation. The word soma is a Greek word meaning the living body in its wholeness. I believe that the body is fundamentally a domain of action, mood, learning, coordination and dignity. Through our bodies we learn to sense others and the environment around us. We learn to express moods and emotions. We generate interpretations and beliefs. We interpret experiences that have occurred historically and we take action towards a future that we get to decide for ourselves and with the communities we are a part of. There is so much about our culture, and about the very real impacts of trauma and oppression that robs us of the wealth of knowledge and resource we can access through our bodies.
Our work will go beyond the traditional talk therapy paradigm. We will engage in specific somatic practices and somatic bodywork that are meant to let us be fully alive, choiceful and resilient, where trauma and oppression has cut us off from our ability to do so.
I was born in Washington and have lived in the Puget Sound region for my entire life. I am proud to call Seattle home for the last 8 years. I'm feeling into the way that the Seattle political, economic, and cultural landscape is rapidly changing. I'm working to remain resilient inside of the many contradictions and challenges we are all facing inside of these conditions.
I received my undergrad degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA where I focused on the political economy of race, class and gender with an emphasis on postcolonial studies. I wouldn't be who I am, with the knowledge I carry into my work if it weren't for my time at Evergreen and in Olympia.
I completed my graduate training in counseling and nutrition at Bastyr University. While at Bastyr I enjoyed making connections between physical and mental health, while also working to further my own understanding of the ways that cultural context shapes our relationship to food and our bodies. I believe in the Health at Every Size approach and have completed intensive training with Dr. Linda Bacon. I completed my senior practicum experience at Seattle's very own Seattle Counseling Service.
I continue to expand my knowledge and skills by attending trainings related to somatics, Health at Every Size, body image, disordered eating, trauma, and social justice. I hold licensure in the state of Washington as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC #LH60749491) and Certified Nutritionist (CN #NU60571006).
In addition, I've been training and doing my own healing work through Generative Somatics since 2010. Through this work, I've learned how the body can be such a resource for healing, transformation, and action. Through this work, I've been able to integrate my passion for healing and an informed trauma analysis with social justice organizing work. It is more clear to me now than ever, that we need healing, both individually and collectively, to create a more liberatory path forward as a planet.
I have a strong commitment to collective liberation and building alternatives to capitalism in the here and now and into the future. This commitment is infused not only in my work as a healer, but in the way I approach life in general. I've been involved in social justice activism and organizing since I was a teenager. I am multiracial, with both black and white ancestry. I'm really excited about being queer and femme.
When I'm not doing healing work, I love to move my body in ways that bring me joy and help me connect to community, like dancing. I train Muay Thai and Western boxing. I spend a lot of my time nerding out on astrology and all the political economic theory and social justice movement analysis and history I can get my hands on. The close people in my life know that my greatest fear is not having time to read all of my books before I die. I am invested in cultivating deep and lasting relationships with the close people in my life. Meaningful self-care and making my time as sustainable and life-affirming as possible are huge priorities. I love cats and bees and pigs. The Puget Sound is my #1 source of resilience.
